Heritage Saskatchewan is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of our province. We believe that cultural heritage is living, evolving, and something we all have in common. This shared heritage helps to foster a sense of belonging, meaning, identity, and wellbeing for all those who call Saskatchewan home.
Cultural heritage is a broad definition that encompasses architecture, traditions, arts, music, food, sports, language, and other elements of human life that are passed on to future generations. These elements influence our ways of living and help us understand the present and our choices for the future. At its core, cultural heritage shows who we are, where we come from, and where we want to go.
VISION: Heritage is a valued and dynamic legacy that contributes to our sense of identity, creates an understanding of our past, is used to build communities in the present, and informs our choices for the future.
MISSION: Heritage Saskatchewan gives voice to living Heritage.
Heritage Saskatchewan promotes cultural heritage through educational programming, awards that recognize important work in the sector, and advocacy at both the governmental and non-governmental levels.
Our research interests are particularly focused on understanding the impacts that our values, beliefs, and ways of living (our living heritage) have on collective wellbeing and our ability to negotiate a shared future.
Our activities and work align closely with UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Our work is focused on Saskatchewan but extends nationally and internationally. In 2019, we became one of only nine NGOs in Canada (and the only organisation west of Quebec) to be accredited by UNESCO in Intangible Cultural Heritage.
