School hoping for successful recipe

Mar 25, 2011

When Maple Creek entrepreneur Tina Cresswell was handed lemons -her restaurant business was hit hard when the stock market plummeted and the economy took a downswing in 2008, then it suffered Mother Nature's wrath when the town of Maple Creek was flooded in 2010 -she started searching for a creative way to branch out. To make lemonade, so to speak. She decided to combine her passion for food and feeding people with her love of teaching, and establish an international cooking school in Maple Creek, a community of about 2,200, nestled at the base of the Cypress Hills. (It's located midway between Regina and Calgary). And she's hoping the new venture will prove to be a recipe for success. Etoile Culinary Arts International Professional Cooking School, which will cater primarily to students from Saskatchewan and the Philippines, will be housed in the same restored heritage building as The Star Cafe & Grill, a casual fine dining restaurant owned by Cresswell and her husband, Dave Turner. (The name "etoile" was chosen because it's the French word for "star.") The restaurant will be closed from Sunday until April 15 for extensive kitchen renovations for the cooking school. The existing kitchen is being emptied, torn down, and completely rebuilt and re-equipped. Cooking classes are slated to begin in September.
