Saskatchewan Youth Heritage Fair Program – not your parents’ heritage fairs!!
Apr 17, 2013
(actually, did our folks even have heritage fairs?)
I always stifle a giggle when I think of the exploding science fair volcanoes seen in movies. Dioramas and display boards are a thing of the past when you think of how tech-savvy youth are. Today’s Youth Heritage Fairs are dynamic, multimedia education events!
At the heart, Youth Fairs encourage investigation into a local, Saskatchewan or Canadian hero, legend, milestone or achievement. Students in grade 4 to grade 9 classrooms across the province develop their heritage fair projects around curriculum. The fairs promote academic excellence, creative thinking and the inquiry-based learning approach. The best projects from each school are selected to participate in regional heritage fairs throughout the province. The top projects are then chosen to attend the Provincial Youth Heritage Showcase.
There was a national contest last year where students from across the country developed videos regarding their heritage fair projects. To see the buzz technology is creating view a few at:

Show your support for the kids as they develop into our future researchers, videographers and curators. April and May are the months for students to showcase their creative efforts in all things heritage.
Check out a regional Youth Heritage Fair near you: April 18-19 in Saskatoon (Nutana Curling Club); April 25 & 26 in Moose Jaw’s Western Development Museum and May 3 at the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina. Guaranteed not to have exploding volcanoes although hologram volcanoes are a possibility.
The Provincial Heritage Showcase will take place in Regina the evening of Thursday, May 23rd and Friday, May 24th at Government House (4607 Dewdney Avenue). The Provincial Showcase will include a waterslide/pizza party, Ghost Tours, Historical Re-enactments, Geocaching, Media Event showcasing student projects and a banquet lunch.? Fifteen students from each regional heritage fair will be selected to participate. We thank
Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation for their support.
