President Jack Walton’s report from the Board

Sep 30, 2014

The Board of Directors met on September 19 & 20 in Saskatoon and tackled the task of 'self evaluation' to allow us to gain some insight into the success of each board meeting measured against expectations expressed by each board member at the start of the meeting. In setting the scene for the check-out and self evaluation at the conclusion, the HS board individually sets the expectations of the meeting at the outset by using a check-in at the beginning of the meeting where individual board members can indicate benchmarks of what might constitute a successful meeting from their perspective. We have adopted the term 'Foundations for Success' in describing the check in statements. Generally the process worked well and we expect to hone it in our coming meetings. Of course, much of what is discussed at a policy governance board meeting is 'policy'. This was no exception as the board engaged in extensive discussions of policies pertaining to internal and external committee appointments as well as the process and responsibilities for developing, vetting & circulating of Board minutes. Monitoring of policies in a timely manner is a crucial piece to policy governance. In this meeting we engaged in the task of the Ends Monitoring led by CEO Ingrid Cazakoff. The process gives the Directors a sense of how well the organisation is doing measured against its Ends Statement. The result of this process is that we are on track but always vigilant as to the clarity of our Ends Statements and their appropriateness in an ever-changing community. The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be held in Regina December 12 &13th.
