Heritage Saskatchewan Comments on Provincial Budget 2012-2013
Mar 22, 2012
Heritage Saskatchewan, the provincial voice for Saskatchewan’s heritage community, expressed disappointment with the Provincial Budget released yesterday.
Overall spending on heritage-related initiatives within the Government of Saskatchewan remains essentially unchanged.
“With the province’s economy booming, now is the time to tell the world about Saskatchewan’s famous quality of life and unique history,” says Kristin Enns-Kavanagh, President of the Board of Directors. “We have a great story to tell. It’s especially important to talk about heritage now because, with the province changing fast, we want to make sure we enjoy the benefits of growth without sacrificing our quality of life, and that includes a sense of our rich heritage. So the question becomes, if we aren’t investing in quality of life now, when are we going to invest?”
“Saskatchewan’s heritage institutions like the Western Development Museum, Saskatchewan Archives and Wanuskewin Heritage Park have been chronically underfunded for years and have struggled to keep up with the cost of living. Small or no increases do not address the real needs of these institutions which have, for years, been challenged to keep themselves viable. Without proper funds, it is difficult to be innovative in preserving and sharing our collective heritage to audiences including the citizens of Saskatchewan and the world.”
“Heritage Saskatchewan’s role as the collective voice for heritage in Saskatchewan puts our organization in a unique position to enter into dialogue with government regarding heritage issues,” says Ingrid Cazakoff, CEO. “Part of our role is to build relationships with decision-makers so we can get the message out about the value, both economic and social, of investing in Saskatchewan’s heritage legacy.”
Heritage Saskatchewan is a non-profit, community-based organization that represents the collective voice for heritage activity and interests throughout the Province of Saskatchewan. Its members advocate preserving our collective heritage for future generations and advancing the public agenda on heritage-related issues.
