Art Unveiling: The Lost Story of Yee Clun and Regina's "White Women's Labour Law"

The Lost Stories Project engages Canadians in the process of commemorating their history. This project brings together members of the public, artists and filmmakers to explore little known stories about the Canadian past.

You are cordially invited to the inauguration of the artwork by Xiao Han!

The public art created by Xiao Han tells the story of Yee Clun, a Regina restaurant owner who came to prominence in 1924 when fighting a Saskatchewan law that required him -- as a Chinese-Canadian, to secure a municipal license to hire “white women” as employees. This artwork is being inaugurated exactly 93 years from the day that Yee Clun submitted his application, a courageous act that prompted a lively public debate about the place of Chinese-Canadians in society, and the extent to which women needed to be protected.
